Spring Cleaning “Tips” for the Real World

I’m a bit behind on things, as always. I haven’t hunkered down and blitzed through my spring cleaning yet. Sure, I’ve had a few productive sessions of window washing – which quickly were destroyed when Super Toddler decided to “help” by re-washing the windows and mirrors with a peanut butter sandwich…but the original effort has got to count for something, right?

And I’ll confess: I’m a Pinterest mom…I look at all those fantastic tips and ideas, dutifully re-pinning them to my various boards….imagining a world where I have all my pre-packaged frozen Crock Pot meals all ready to be un-zipped and cooked while I make hand soap and fairy lights for the garden. One day, maybe.

But let’s be honest here: we all live in the real world. We’re busy. We work. Do we REALLY have the time to get it all done? And keep sane?

So, I’ve decided to break it all down into manageable pieces. And the only fragments of time I seem to have available are twice a week- when I’m home with my daughter, and she’s down for her afternoon nap. Sure, it’ll have to be quiet, but I think it can be done. Slowly. Over time. Spring cleaning will take the entire spring season. Perhaps that’s why it’s called Spring Cleaning after all…

Martha Stewart has checklists, Pinterest Boards are completely awash with pins from professional mom bloggers with great tips and checklists, so there’s no shortage of suggestions and shortcuts.

Polishing door knobs, sorting through medicine cabinets, flipping mattresses: how long can those activities take? And let’s face it, with such fascinating tasks as scrubbing grout, vacuuming fridge coils and re-organizing Tupperware cupboards: who wouldn’t want to keep sessions short and sweet?

Okay, so perhaps this blog doesn’t quite provide anyone with life-changing insights, but for me, it’s a revelation to realize that it doesn’t have to be an “all or nothing” sort of world. The days of being able to take an entire day or weekend to devote to accomplishing a particular task are gone now, but there are still options. Use what time you have. Do what you can. And give yourself permission to chill out with a nice cup of tea (or wine) once in a while. The laundry will wait. Trust me. It ain’t goin’ nowhere…
