I’ll be honest, I’m not much of a spa person.
Not too sure why, but I guess the notion of wandering around amongst strangers wearing nothing but a bathrobe doesn’t really do it for me.
But there’s something about Whistler’s Scandinave Spa, which is so refreshing and rejuvenating that I’ve actually gone back more than once.
If you don’t know what they’re all about, you may be surprised. The treatments aren’t your typical facials or pedicures. In fact, they don’t offer those at all. The spa experience is based on the age-old art of hydrotherapy – using water for pain relief, cleansing and relaxation.
The premises is simple: you alternate periods of hot treatments (hot tub, sauna and eucalyptus steam room) with a short refreshing burst of cold water from “nordic plunge pools” and cold showers. Then you have a self-timed recovery experience, where you can relax in sun chairs, solariums, hammocks or around a firepit. Magazines are provided, and napping is commonplace. One unusual covenant is that conversation is discouraged throughout the spa. Silence is golden. (Although you will find friends whispering together in the acoustic privacy of the hot tub!)
And you can stay as long as you want, repeating the steps as long as you wish. (Standard day rate is $58….robe, towels and locks provided- you bring the swimsuit, water bottle and flip flops). You can even take a break for refreshments (no cocktails, sadly) at their snack bar which is catered by the Bearfoot Bistro.
They also offer massages (Swedish, hot stone, deep tissue and Thai yoga), and I can attest to the fact that their staff is skilled!
So my friends, this is where I pass along the good news. For the month of June, there is an unlimited weekday (Monday to Friday) pass for $99. This is such a great deal- especially for locals- or those of us who can even make it up to Whistler twice – it would pay for itself after only two uses! The spa is open from 10 am to 9 pm daily. So you can even do a quick post-work visit, or post-twoonie ride treat!
Amazing. You’re welcome!
